Origin of the name Pelorus
The pelorus, for which Pelorus DGS is named, is a compass-like instrument used to determine the bearing
of landmarks in relation to a ship. Bearings are measured from a reference that has been determined by
the position of the north pole. The origin of the pelorus is uncertain, but is named for and usually
attributed to the Italian pilot that guided Hannibal from Italy to Carthage around hazardous Cape Faro,
Sicily, during the war between Carthage and Rome. Hannibal, the Carthaginian general, is usually
remembered for taking his troops and war elephants over the Alps from Spain into Italy.
